The administration of Abia State has taken a decisive step toward partnering with the government of the United States of America in the revitalization and refurbishment of national museums and other monuments located around the state.

Martins Okey Justice, who serves as a Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the Governor of Abia State and is responsible for the state’s tourism and entertainment industries, revealed this new information.

The State Secretary for Antiquities and Museums (SSA), who was on a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), Professor Abba Tijani at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, conveyed the State government’s resolve to modernize the sector.

Martins, who was met on behalf of the NCMM D-G by the Director of Museums, Mr. Abdul Gimba, and other management staff, made specific attention to the deteriorating old Eastern Nigeria Administrative Building, which is more commonly referred to as the Ojukwu Bunker.

He stated that in addition to Ojukwu Bunker, other significant monuments that are owned by the NCMM and are located inside the state of Abia will also be renovated by the state government with the goal of transforming them into major destinations for tourists from all over the world.

Martins explained that Governor Alex Otti had given him orders to supervise a complete overhaul of the culture and tourism sector in the state in order to reposition it for the purpose of attracting tourists and providing employment opportunities. Martins also mentioned that the hospitality and tourism sector would be the primary driver of economic growth in the state over the next two years.

The State Secretariat of Administration (SSA) stated, while expressing gratitude to the Federal government for their interests in the planned museum rehabilitation plans, that Governor Alex Otti was very passionate about expanding all tourism sites in the State. This was noted while expressing gratitude on behalf of the State government to the Federal government.

Two of the most popular tourist destinations in Umuahia are the Ojukwu Bunker, which can be found at Afara, and the National War Museum, which can be found at Amafor Isingwu in the Umuahia North Local Government Area.
