Since December 2022, when the first instances of cholera and diphtheria were reported, Zamfara State has documented a total of 1188 cases of cholera and 50 cases of diphtheria across the state’s 14 local government areas.
This information was shared by the State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Aishatu Anka, on Wednesday at the Shagari Cholera Treatment Centre in Gusau while she was distributing medical supplies there.

Cholera has been reported to be widespread in the Gusau Anka, Bakura, and Bukkuyum local government regions of the state, according to Anka.
According to the commissioner, the Governor of the State, Dauda Lawan, has visited some of the patients at Anka General Hospital, and he is currently saying, “I am here at Shagari Cholera Treatment Centre to equally assess the patient’s response to treatment.”
She stated that there had been 40 fatalities out of the 1188 instances that had been registered so far.

She also stated that there have been fifty cases of diphtheria, with two deaths having been documented.
The commissioner has stated that an inquiry is currently being carried out in order to determine the severity of the disease’s spread.
Anka praised the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention for creating a state center at the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, and she advised residents of the area to practice good personal hygiene and ensure that their surroundings are clean.

She pleaded with the general people to ensure that they drank only clean water, explaining that doing so would make it easier for the state to effectively stop the sickness from spreading further.
