Osun INEC REC calls for severe punishments for “quack” attorneys

The NBA, the Nigerian Bar Association, has been advised to combat the threat of “quack lawyers” by increasing their monitoring efforts.

The request was made by Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun.

During Friday’s supper at Chrisland University, Abeokuta, College of Law, Agboke made the announcement as a special guest speaker.

Agboke stated, “The NBA must step up its monitoring activities like never before” in response to the widespread use of imposter lawyers. False lawyers are similar to quack surgeons, thus it must not rest until they are held accountable.

“Fake lawyers, like quack surgeons, will just put people in jail and bring shame to the noble profession, just as quack surgeons will put people to their early graves.”

Osun INEC chief also said that aspiring attorneys should be prepared to put in a lot of time in the classroom, and he clarified that the public does not casually refer to lawyers as “learned members of the public” for no reason.

Speaking on the topic of “Pathway to a Successful Legal Career,” Agboke emphasized to the students the need of being prepared to study and avoiding distractions in order to succeed in the legal profession.

There is a problem with pretend lawyers since many of them did not complete their legal education or did not do well enough on their final exams to be called to the bar or allowed to practice law. If you do, the law will deal with you since you are a bogus lawyer.

Get more reading done that is related to what you are teaching. Prepare for every class as if it were a test or examination by reading up on the cases mentioned in your notes and doing additional independent research whenever it is convenient for you.

Ensure that your cumulative grade point average remains high. Every semester, you have to do better. It is within your reach. It is within your reach. Nobody possesses inherent intellect or genius. Do what’s necessary to reach your goal.

In his lecture, the university’s vice chancellor, Professor Chinedum Babalola, pledged that the institution would stop at nothing to ensure that its College of Law graduates were among the best in Nigeria.

Even though it was the most recently accredited college at the school, Babalola said that the Law College had looked promising.

He cautioned aspiring legal giants to buckle in for a challenging but rewarding academic journey.
