Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of State for Police Affairs, has requested the European Union’s (EU) assistance in the form of technical assistance for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), with the goal of enabling the police ecosystem to realize its goal of implementing global norms and best practices.

The proposal was made by Suleiman-Ibrahim at a meeting with the EU team led by the European Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, which took place at the offices of the ministry in Abuja.

According to a statement that was signed by the Deputy Director of Press at the ministry, Bolaji Kazeem, the minister stated that the technical help and partnership should be in the area of addressing policy gaps and capacity building that would increase the performances of the Police Force. The statement was released by the ministry.

According to her, the Renewed Hope Agenda consists of eight different components, one of which is peace and security. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the ministry and the EU in the areas of reforms, capacity building, and community policing in order to reduce the occurrence of transnational crimes in order to achieve joint goals.

She stated that what we are looking at is community-based policing that is led by intelligence and is driven by technology. That is the way that every police force in the world operates, the way that we prefer to proceed. Together, we will accomplish much more than we could on our own because EUROPO, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, possesses a significant amount of capacity in this field.

“I am seeking every support that can be for the ministry to achieve the Renewed Hope Agenda which has policing components and none of them can work without it. I am seeking every support that can be for the ministry.” We are currently working on integrating the many different police reforms that have already been implemented, investigating the reasons why they have not been properly implemented, and determining what we can accomplish within the next two to three years.

Samuela Isopi, the European Union’s Ambassador to Nigeria, announced earlier that the EU will continue to support all of Nigeria’s key agencies that are involved in enhancing the coordination of policing in the areas of training and capacity building. She said that this support would come from the EU.

She went on to say that the European Union (EU) has a fruitful working relationship with the Nigeria Police Force, mentioning that the two organizations coordinate their efforts to combat human trafficking and the smuggling of migrants.

Isopi mentioned that the EU has a new migration program that would be signed the next week and emphasized that “the agreement is essential because it is a political tool to do more in other areas.” The deal will be signed next week.

“We are in the process of preparing a new phase of our program to end gender-based violence, and we need your cooperation and support so that we can work together.”
