Abia will make restitution to the families of murdered police officers and cruelty victims

The Abia State Government would provide fair compensation to the families of the policemen slain in Aba on Tuesday when gunmen attacked the convoy of Chimezie Ukaegbu, the commissioner of trade, commerce, and investment for the Abia State.

This is in spite of the state government’s assurance that it will pay Aba’s innocent businessmen who were abused by police in retaliatory attacks.

In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the state governor, Alex Otti, made the commitment and denounced the brutal killing of the police officers in Aba by unidentified gunmen.

Governor Otti said that the attack on the police officers by the as-yet-unidentified gunmen was cruel, unjust, and extremely provocative. He said that all men and women of good conscience should denounce the attack.

He also strongly denounced the alleged reprisal attack by some police officers on Wednesday against some innocent bystanders in the city of Aba, branding the actions of those policemen as illegal and counterproductive given that it was not established that the victims were directly or indirectly responsible for the attack that claimed the lives of the two police officers.

In order to restore calm and normalcy in the Aba region, Otti claimed that he promptly persuaded police authorities to remove the officers who were abusing defenseless bystanders from the affected districts.

“Governor Otti promises that his administration will use all of its resources to bring the killers of police officers and their sponsors to justice and bring to justice the police officers who broke the law by abusing helpless civilians and destroying their property. He is adamant that two wrongs never equal a right.

Finally, he added, “the Governor has also pledged to see to it that sufficient compensation is paid to the families of the slain Officers as well as to innocent citizens who were brutalized and had their properties destroyed.”

The governor of Abia said that reliable intelligence had identified a potential point of origin for the attack and that security personnel had already mobilized to crush all types of criminal activity in the state.

The wellbeing and security of all Abians will continue to be a top concern for his government, he assured them, and he urged them to go about their normal business without fear.

Some victims of the police retaliation attacks on Wednesday have applauded the decision to pay the Aba shopkeepers, especially those who were hurt or had their property destroyed by enraged cops who were mourning their fallen comrades.
