Fans were required to remain inside the stadium for close to three hours as a precaution against the perpetrator, who was still at large and believed to be targeting Swedes.
The evacuation began at approximately twelve in the morning local time.
After the match was called off, spectators inside King Baudouin Stadium began chanting, “All together, all together,” while thousands of fans on both teams also yelled, “Sweden, Sweden!”

According to Manu Leroy, CEO of the Belgian Soccer Union, “It was decided in the first place that the match should go ahead because the stadium was the safest place to be at the time, so that the fans could stay here and be safe.” The decision to play the match was made because the stadium was the safest place to be at the time.
According to statements made to the media by Eric Van Duyse, a spokeswoman for the office of the federal prosecutor, the inquiry is focusing on “a possible terrorist motivation for the shooting.”
