Arewa Civil Society Organizations have given Yusuf Magaji Bichi, the director general of the Department of State Services (DSS), a 48-hour deadline to obey the court and free all people in their institution as the court has directed.

If the deadline was not met, the Arewa Civil Society Organizations threatened to organize people to occupy the yellow house’s space as part of a peaceful demonstration asking Mr. Yusuf Magaji Bichi, Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), quit without condition.

According to a statement from its chairman, Adamu Aminu Musa, “The Arewa Civil Society Organizations will be forced to mobilize members under its umbrella to come out in numbers and match to occupy premises of the Yellow House for a peaceful protest demanding the unconditional resignation of Mr. Yusuf Magaji Bichi, Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS).”

It bemoaned the DSS’s ongoing assault on the judiciary, which includes disobeying several court orders and unlawfully detaining Nigerian people in violation of their basic human rights.

It was noted that Mr. Emefiele was taken into custody by the secret service on June 10, 2023, in Lagos, and held there for more than a month without releasing him or charging him with a crime. It was also noted that Alhaji Aminu Yaro and his wife, Sa’adatu Yaro, were taken into custody on July 12, 2023, and have been held there as well, all in violation of their basic human rights.

The statement noted that two separate Judges, Justice Nicholas Oweibo and Justice Edward Okpe have presided over the cases in Lagos and Abuja on 25th of July, 2023 and have both granted bail to Mr Emefiele and his subsequent remand in Nigerian Correctional Service and immediate release of Alhaji Aminu Yaro and his wife but regretted that an order restraining DSS from arresting or administering any inhuman or degrading treatment on the couple in the interim was issued.

Despite legal interventions, the statement said that the DSS had stubbornly disregarded the court’s orders and refused to release the detainees, claiming that doing so would violate human rights and would subject Nigerian nationals they were supposed to protect to torture and maltreatment.

The statement expressed regret over the very alarming and disturbing dehumanization of Nigerians by the DSS under Bichi and requested assistance from all parties, Amnesty International’s intervention, and the National Human Rights Commission to look into Bichi’s activities in order to protect innocent Nigerians from further degradation.
