Crisis in the LP: Peter Obi condemns Abure’s imprisonment and says such behavior must be condemned

In response to Julius Abure’s detention, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the most recent general elections, has spoken out.

Police and DSS agents worked together to apprehend Abure and Mr. Kelly Ogbaloi, the party’s chairman in Edo State, according to the furucinovel.

The LP Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, was allegedly loyal to the party’s factional head, Lamidi Apapa, and he petitioned for his arrest.

Claiming to have been assaulted in December 2023 by certain party members, the youth party leader petitioned the Commissioner of Police.

Just 48 hours before the primary election on September 21st, Abure was forcibly jailed in Edo State. The governorship election is scheduled for September 21st.

But according to what furucinovel was able to glean, Abure was released on bond on Wednesday night.

“Like many Nigerians, I observed the distasteful national television news reports detailing the humiliating arrest of the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barrister Julius Abure, earlier today in Benin City, Edo State,” Peter Obi wrote on X in response to yesterday’s events.

I have always argued that the rule of law must be preserved in every reasonable society, whether I be a private citizen, a public person, a governor, or a presidential contender.

In my opinion, everyone, regardless of their social standing, has an obligation to comply with requests made by legitimately established authorities.

Watching the disturbing image of our National Chairman lying on the ground under the name of arrest does not change my view on this topic, nevertheless.

In light of our current political climate in Nigeria, any reasonable and civilized person would denounce this act for what it is:

An unwanted, degrading, and absolutely repulsive behavior. These heinous acts represent the height of depravity and further discredit our country’s already terrible reputation for being a lawless one.

In order to maintain our society’s principles of fairness and respect for the dignity of the individual, it is necessary to aggressively address and reject such behavior.

Concerning the events leading up to Mr. Abure’s arrest, it is essential to stress that while constitutional authorities must be granted the power to carry out their statutory duties, officers must follow all protocols for making an arrest, be respectful of citizens’ rights and dignity, and, most importantly, treat everyone with the utmost dignity and decency.

Mr. Abure is the face of Nigeria’s political opposition, both in his personal life and in his official capacity as the current Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). Above all else, political parties should be respected for what they are: pillars of democratic sovereignty.

No amount of deceit or pretense should be used to silence the political opposition in Nigeria. Consequently, I strongly believe that he should be granted bail according to his standing so that the investigation into his alleged offense can proceed.
