Despite the federal government’s inability to resolve ASUU, members of the House of Representatives have sworn to keep establishing universities and tertiary institutions in their home districts.

The House’s members on Thursday rejected a resolution by Speaker of the House Femi Gbajabiamila to halt all legislation that sought to establish institutions.

Gbajabiamila cautioned that lawmakers could not keep establishing universities in their own districts to keep campaign pledges.

In opposition to Gbajabiamila’s viewpoint, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris moved that any attempt to prevent members from sponsoring tertiary education measures could jeopardize members’ political ambition.

“You are aware of how politicians act, sir. Whether the measure is signed or not, it is political harm when certain people don’t hear their community acknowledged, he added.

Ndudi Elumelu, the minority leader, voiced a similar opposition. He claimed that constituents anticipate MPs to support the opening of schools.

In regards to supporting a measure for the establishment of a college of education, polytechnic, or university in their local areas, he remarked, “In my perspective, I think it is not wise to shut off every voice or every member on this floor.”
