A 24-person committee on food security has been established by the Yobe State government in an effort to address the state’s food scarcity and ease the suffering of its people.

The Committee has been tasked with stopping the export of grains to other nations and dealing with the issue of state-wide stockpiling of necessities.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, who opened the committee, stated that while the country struggles with the fallout from the removal of oil subsidies, inflation, unfavorable foreign exchange, and other economic issues, some unscrupulous people are taking advantage of the situation by making needless large purchases and stockpiling staple foods, further aggravating the situation for the people.

He bemoaned the fact that this kind of profiteering violates state norms and principles and is cruel to international law.

The Committee’s mandate includes the following tasks:

“Work with security agencies to solve the issue of grain hoarding within the State and to stop the export of grains outside the nation.”

“Public sale of obtained grains at discounted costs.

“Make certain that comparable committees are established at the local levels to address the issue of food insecurity in the State.”

“Provide guidance and recommendations to the government regarding any additional actions required to tackle the issue of food insecurity within the state,” he said.

Buni, who acknowledged that the powerful committee had a lot on its plate, urged the public to work with the committee by supplying crucial data so that it can combat the threat of food insecurity in the state.

“I urge the committee members to take immediate action, as any delay could potentially undermine public interest,” he said.
