On Monday, the Federal Government announced its intention to raise the minimum salary for employees from its existing level of N30,000 in order to keep up with the times.

The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC members were informed of this by the Minister of Labor and Employment, Chris Ngige, in Abuja at a presentation of a book titled, “Contemporary History of Working Class Struggles.”

The minister claimed that the present global inflation, which has a detrimental effect on citizens’ purchasing power, necessitated the increase in the minimum wage.

He expressed his happiness that a new review clause was added in the 2019 Minimum Wage Act, making it simpler for the administration.

He said that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, has begun negotiating a wage adjustment with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minimum salary would be adjusted to reflect current conditions, according to Ngige, who also noted that the 2019 Minimum Wage Act has a new provision for periodic reviews.

“That adjustment has begun with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), because the negotiations for their collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, with their principal employer, the Ministry of Education, are where they are at this time.”
