Garba cautions NLC about FG demands saying that they will result in the dismissal of employees

Adamu Garba, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has cautioned that the demands being made of the Federal Government by the labor unions may cause private sector employers to fire some of their employees.

He asserts that the degree of demands being placed on the federal government by the Trade Union Congress and the Nigerian Labour Congress are untenable.

The previous candidate for president pointed out that the combined workforces of the federal, state, and municipal governments are significantly smaller than those of the private sector.

How do they expect us to manage with being private employers of labor, they ask? How would the administration treat us as well?

“It means layoffs across many private companies if you force us to increase the minimum wage of all our employees above what our income can handle.”

He advised the labor unions to negotiate carefully.

“We must stop continuing to spend 70% of our budget on the wages of civil employees, removing subsidies to raise more money for development, raising the civil service’s minimum pay once again, and then spending all of the subsidy gains on salaries, which is an obvious vicious cycle.

“The truth of the matter is, we are at a crossroads; a proverbial battle between body and soul: We either choose our soul by enduring the pains of now for the overall benefit of tomorrow, or we choose our bodily pleasure by eating everything today and damn the consequences from tomorrow.”
