Operators of commercial motorbikes and tricycles in Kaduna have begun rejecting old naira notes ahead of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) January 31 deadline.

On Tuesday, a furucinovel writer saw that, despite fuel scarcity, operators of the few commercial motorbikes and tricycles providing skeleton services were rejecting fresh notes.

Many city service providers, particularly merchants and women, have decided to take only new cash.

“We are all aware that this old note will no longer be useful after this week,” said a motorcyclist who identified himself as Dele Busa, “so why are they paying for transit price with old notes again?”

Similarly, a tricyclist identified as Madamko said he instructed any would-be passenger to pay his or her transportation price with new notes because the old currency will expire on January 31.

He believes that once banks began issuing new cash, there is no reason to accept old currency.

“Take your old note to the bank, obtain fresh cash, and pay for the service I provide you, simple,” he stated.

He recommended anyone who had old currency to find a way to exchange it for new cash in order to prevent a loss.

Mrs Rose Musa, a foodstuff seller in Kakuri market, also stated that she has begun rejecting old cash because many local sellers from whom she purchases foodstuff in significant amounts have since refused the previous currency.

Mr Joseph Badmus, the chairman of the Kaduna Motorcycles Group, disclosed to DAILY POST in Sabon Tasha that he has since advised members of the association not to accept outdated cash.
