NADECO USA warns Akpabio to resign or face impeachment if he does not

In the United States of America (USA), the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has demanded that Senator Godswill Akpabio, the current President of the Senate, resign from his position due to his allegedly ineffective management of the business of the upper body.

According to the Coalition, Akpabio, who was installed as President of the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has completely subjugated his colleagues under the executive and has corroded the independence and integrity of the legislature in Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Akpabio to his position.

In a statement that was released on Tuesday, the Executive Director of NADECO USA, Mr. Lloyd Ukwu, accused Akpabio of displaying an extreme disregard for the Standing Rules of the Senate in reference to the order of business, lively discussions during plenary, and comprehensive vetting of executive messages and bills.

As a result of this, Ukwu has issued a call to the senators, urging them to start impeachment proceedings against Akpabio as soon as possible “for making the upper chamber a laughing stock through naivety, immaturity, and eagerness to please the executive, irrespective of the repercussions of his actions on the Senate as an institution and democratic governance in Nigeria.”

He stated that “Akpabio is fond of keeping communications from the President which are supposed to be read during announcement time until the end of plenary,” as he did most recently when he announced the last three ministerial nominees by the President towards the tail end of plenary. He said that “Akpabio is fond of keeping communications from the President which are supposed to be read during announcement time until the end of plenary.”

“Only very recently, the Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC – Borno South), and Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo (SDP – Nasarawa South) openly accused Akpabio of not giving senators adequate opportunity to interrogate and scrutinize bills, especially money bills, and warned that history would judge him for approving executive requests and passing important legislations posthaste.”

Ukwu emphasized that if Akpabio would not quit or if the Senators did not successfully impeach him, then NADECO USA would have no choice but to organize its people in the United States and Nigerians living in diaspora for a mass action to guarantee that he resigned from his position as senator.
