The Lagos State House of Assembly has stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) redesign of the naira has caused Nigerians to suffer, putting the economy in jeopardy.
The MPs admitted that the program was beneficial, but it was implemented at the wrong time, generating economic upheaval that could be impossible to overcome if immediate action is not taken.

On Tuesday, legislators petitioned the CBN to extend the deadline for the currency swap during a session presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
The Speaker lamented that the people were in “pain, agony, and wrath” because they couldn’t get their hands on the new naira notes.
“Economists have warned that most of the time, using new currency to control inflation does not work,” Obasa added.

He stated that the policy’s stated purpose has been defeated as a result of multiple concerns from experts and the public.
Instead of a “overnight” strategy, the Speaker said the apex bank should have engaged stakeholders and carried citizens along.
Concerned about the predicament of rural residents, Obasa stated that a 10-day delay would be insufficient.

The Speaker highlighted that in other nations, outdated currencies are progressively phased out of the system rather than abandoned in a rush.
Obasa praised the National Assembly for providing quality representation and demanded that the January 31 deadline be extended.
The motion’s sponsor, Hon. Rotimi Olowo of Somolu Constituency 1, sought an extension of the deadline to July 2023 in accordance with a federal legislature resolution.
“CBN governors, unlike Emefiele, are economists. “Our people are suffering, and there is no money in the ATMs,” Hon. Setonji David stated.

outlets a way of mentally affecting the team.
‘There was all these photos of me strangling the imaginary referee.
‘So, I thought, ‘I’m gonna stop doing that’. I’d go to
a game and see what happens then I’d go backstage and you can swear.
‘But when I’m watching the game, I try and keep my
cool…because you know I think about it from the
players’ perspective.
They don’t want to see the boss looking like he’s pissed off in the Monday newspaper.
So you’ve got to be cool about it.’
Souths fans – including Crowe – endured a torrid 2024 season,
finishing 16th with a 7-17 record.
Injuries and suspensions played their part
but defensive frailties were the biggest issue, with the Rabbitohs conceding an average of 28.4
points per game – their worst since 2006.
The Rabbitohs have gone back to the future by sacking coach Jason Demetriou
and re-instating former mentor Wayne Bennett
Souths fans will be hoping to see a fit and firing Latrell Mitchell back on the park next season
Injuries compounded their struggles, with key players like Campbell Graham
missing the entire season and Latrell Mitchell limited to 11 appearances.
The season’s disappointments led to the dismissal
of coach Jason Demetriou, with Wayne Bennett set to
return as head coach in 2025.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Rabbitohs have bolstered
their roster by signing English halfback Lewis Dodd, Euan Aitken and Josh Schuster.
The 2025 season kicks off with a match against Bennett’s former club the
Dolphins.
