In a harsh criticism on two Dutch internationals, Virgil van Dijk and Frenkie de Jong, Dutch icon Ruud Gullit claimed they lacked leadership skills.

Following recent losses to Croatia and Italy in the Nations League, the former Chelsea manager, who won the Euro 1988 with the Dutch team, criticized the Dutch tandem.

Croatia defeated the Netherlands 4-2 in the semifinals, however they lost 3-2 to Italy in the play-off for third place.

The legendary AC Milan player claimed in a piece for De Telegraaf that “I find that these two essential players do not measure up when necessary.

They fall short of the standards that could be expected of them as strong world leaders. Van Dijk and De Jong, in my opinion, lack leadership abilities.

“A coach finds it challenging to function without leaders.”
