The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso has asserted that some of his contemporaries will not be harmed by the naira redesign strategy as “they are owners of banks”.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, revealed intentions to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes in October 2022.

Nigerians have been invited to submit their old currencies by January 31, 2023.

Despite the fact that the deadline has been moved to February 10, many Nigerians are still having difficulty obtaining new naira notes.

President Muhammadu Buhari, stating his support for the proposal, remarked it would dissuade politicians from “mobilising resources to scare voters”.

On Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Kwankwaso claimed that politicians, particularly contenders in the next elections, are unaffected by the policy.

“What the government is saying is about people who want to take too much money, such as leaders and politicians.

“They don’t realize that many of our colleagues, those who are contesting, especially the presidential candidates, and by extension all those in their parties are owners of the banks.

“Not only that, but people close to them have banks everywhere. As a result, they stand to gain nothing. Both the PDP and the APC have governors. “By now, governors would have received a lot of money from banks in their states,” Kwankwaso remarked.
