Suffering: I think highly of governors — Akpabio retracts N30 billion statement

Following his assertion that the Bola Tinubu administration had given state governments a N30 billion hardship allowance, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has apologized.

The former governor of Akwa Ibom reportedly stated authoritatively in a recent plenary session, according to the furucinovel, that state governors get the funding from the federal government.

He said that the N30 billion allotted to them from the Federation Account was intended to aid in addressing the issues of growing food costs and inflation.

During the presentation of a report by the joint committees on finance, agriculture/food sufficiency, banking, and insurance, Akpabio addressed at the plenary on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

On Monday, though, a statement from his media office implied that the Senate President’s remarks were misinterpreted.

According to the statement, “the President of the Senate commented during the session on the Federal Government’s payment of an unverified cumulative sum of approximately N30 billion to the sub-national governments for various interventions to improve the food situation of our citizens at the sub-national governments.”

We regret the regrettable assumptions that attempted to remove the crucial element from the FAAC payment’s material facts. The underlying purpose for the comment is still the well-intentioned desire to encourage state governments to work with President Bola Tinubu’s federal administration to facilitate strategic interventions to lessen the current economic condition in the nation.

It stated, “The President of the Senate is not oblivious to the fact that state governments are valuable stakeholders in the various legislative engagements of the legislature in creating the nexus between the legislature and the people and are functional partners in all the efforts of the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.” to Primate Ayodele
