The court denies Baba Ijesha’s request for bail

The convicted Nollywoord actor James Olarewaju, also known as Baba Ijesha, had requested bail awaiting appeal, but the Ikeja Special Offenses Court denied his request.

Because Baba Ijesha did not meet the requirements and unusual circumstances required to justify the bail, his application was denied.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo claims that because the actor was handed a concurrent five-year term, he must demonstrate extraordinary and exceptional circumstances.

Additionally, according to Justice Taiwo, there is no proof that the appeal has been filed and there is no indication that the court won’t handle the issue quickly.

The applicant, who is charged with a serious offense, “has failed to prove extraordinary circumstances that deserve him bail,” the judge continued.

Remember that Baba Ijesha is requesting bail in order to appeal her conviction for sexually abusing a 14-year-old child five years ago.

He had notified the court that a notice for bail awaiting appeal had been lodged in accordance with Section 6(6) of the 1999 Constitution as modified on August 10 through his attorney, Mr. Gabriel Olabiran.

Olabiran asserted that the motion granted bail to the applicant, either unconditionally or subject to reasonable conditions, and that it was presented before the court because it was difficult to secure a hearing at the Court of Appeal.

The state’s attorney, Mr. Yusuf Sule, stated in a rebuttal affidavit on August 18, 2022, that the defense had failed to prove any unique circumstances that may allow the convict to be released on bond.
