According to recent statements made by the Federal Government, new policy initiatives have been developed to ensure that cancer survivors receive proper care.

In an interview that took place on Saturday in Abuja with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Director-General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), Dr. Usman Aliyu, revealed this information.

According to him, the strategy would be implemented as part of one of the three cancer policies that will shortly be introduced by the Federal Government of Nigeria with the intention of assisting with cancer prevention and treatment in Nigeria.

According to him, the institution has, ever since it was founded in January, been working on the policies that are required to ensure that prevention, treatment, and research into all aspects of cancer are given top priority. He claimed this is the case.

The second iteration of the National Strategic Cancer Control Plan has been drafted. The very first one that was ever developed for the nation was for the years 2018 to 2022, but I am pleased to tell you that the institute has drafted a new cancer strategy for the country.

It is an all-encompassing strategy that will take place during the course of the next five years, from 2023 to 2027. This is the first time that cancer survivorship is included in the plan, which also covers cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, palliative care, and even survivorship services. The plan will serve as a leading guide to all cancer-related activities in the country.

“We are having this component of cancer survivorship in our plan for survivors, which is actually a neglected area,” he said. “This is actually a neglected area.”

Aliyu also stated that the institution has completed its collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners in order to produce the nation’s first National Cervical Cancer Control plan for the years 2023-2027.

He stated that the strategy will provide the institute with direction that it plans to follow in accordance with the goal of the WHO in the eradication of cervical cancer by the year 2030.

In addition to this, he stated that because NICRAT is a research center, research is a very important part of the organization; yet, it cannot simply delve into research without first having a plan.

According to what he had to say, “So as a result, we have drafted the very first National Cancer Research Agenda 2024-2028 for the country, which will pave the way and set a course for cancer research in Nigeria.”
