The FG intends to subsidize wheat growers by fifty percent

Wheat growers across the nation will receive a subsidy of fifty percent from the federal government, according to Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture. This is being done to ensure that there will be sufficient food security.

He stated that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda’s primary objective was to ensure that Nigeria will have a steady supply of food beginning the following month, with a focus on wheat cultivation during the dry season.

On Friday, the minister, who was in the states of Kano and Jigawa to inspect the production of wheat seeds, voiced his contentment with the situation.

According to the statements made by the minister, “Jigawa State has demonstrated a great deal of interest in wheat farming by providing 40,000 hectares of land for wheat farming, which brings us closer to the 70,000 hectares that the Federal Government has set aside to accomplish this year.”

He went on to say that the Federal Government is working hard to ensure that there will be sufficient foundation and breeder seeds produced domestically to cover the 70,000 hectares that have been set aside for the cultivation of wheat.

Before the irrigation farming scheduled for the following year could begin, the breeder and foundation seeds were examined to ensure that it was safe to stop importing wheat. This is due to the fact that Nigeria must spend a significant portion of its foreign reserve on the importation of wheat, he explained.

Kyari made the observation that one method to stop importing seeds and wheat is to implement the plan developed by the Federal Government to safeguard the nation’s food production, achieve self-sufficiency, and become dependent on production on the local level.

“In the next four to five years, with the programs set out, Nigeria would completely stop the importations of wheat seeds and be self-sufficient with the local production,” he continued. This would result in an increase in both the amount of food produced and the nation’s level of food security.

In addition to touring the National Wheat Council Warehouses in Sharada, the minister went to AA Albasu Grain Company and Alyumna Seeds Production Company.
