The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved spending N580.50m to buy four armored vehicles for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, made this information known to State House reporters soon after the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, presided over the weekly Council meeting (retd.).

He pointed out that drug baron attacks on the NDLEA as retaliation for recent successes in the drug war would necessitate the necessity for the vehicles.
He added that the Federal Government is “extremely delighted” with the accomplishments made by the NDLEA, which between January and July 2022 resulted in the arrest of 18,940 individuals and the securing of 2,904 convictions.

Malami provided more specifics about the initiative, stating that it will take 16 weeks to deliver the 14-seater cars.
“Today, a document from the Federal Ministry of Justice, which is the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, was presented. It related to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, a parastatal under their control.
“The memo’s objective was to seek council permission for the contract award for the provision of four customized armored security vehicles of the 14-seater model for the NDLEA. The contract cost is N580,500,000 only inclusive of 7.5 percent value added tax with a 16-week delivery time,” Malami said.

The Minister stated that it was decided to purchase the armored vehicles in order to protect the lives of NDLEA employees.
It is well known that the NDLEA has lately been repositioned, and as a result of the help provided in terms of our capacity building, hardware, and related items, they have been seeing extraordinary or previously unheard-of results. Recently, authorities confiscated 1.8 tons of cocaine with an estimated market value of N194 billion.
The criminals and their syndicate are now likely planning attacks on NDLEA employees in light of all these victories, he continued, and it was with this in mind that the document requesting the purchase of such cars for the NDLEA was given and authorized by the council.
