Concern has been voiced by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on the fact that some firms in the North-East region have turned corps members down for employment.

In Yola, the capital city of Adamawa State, on Monday, the NYSC Director in charge of the zone, Mr. Garinvwa Ishaya, made this announcement during a one-day Corps Employers’ Forum.

“Deepening Corps Employers Participation towards Improved Welfare and Security of Corps Members” is the theme that will be covered at the session.

He noted that the tendency was depressing for both the corps members and the scheme, and he added that they should be given conducive settings in their primary assignments so that they might contribute to the nation’s social and economic development.

“The program was initiated with the intention of contributing to the nation’s socio-economic development, and it has had a significant influence in further bringing the nation’s citizens together.

“We are making a fervent appeal to employers to always accept corps members who are deployed to their organizations for the sake of the scheme’s success and the success of the country as a whole.”

According to what he had indicated, “corp members are expected to have their employers make statutory welfare provisions for them to cover their transportation and accommodation.”

As a result, he asked state governments to provide enough housing for the members of the corps and solicited the assistance of local council chairmen in order to advance the goals of the project.

Earlier, the New York State Coordinator for the National Youth Service Corps in Adamawa, Mr. Jingis Denis, stated that the forum would provide the participants with the opportunity to collaborate and share ideas on the scheme’s implementation of its mandate, in addition to receiving feedback on the program.

According to NAN, the North-East zone office of the NYSC is responsible for monitoring the states of Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Yobe, and Borno.
