Professor Tanko Ishaya, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, has stated that one of the requirements for advancement will be the university’s prioritization of funds obtained by faculty members.

According to the VC, the school will no longer use published research papers and publications as the sole yardstick for promoting employees.

He added that the university is actively working to establish its reputation on a worldwide level by securing numerous research funding.

Ishaya made this revelation at a symposium on academic and research grant writing and publishing that was put on by the Office of Research Development (ORD) of the university in association with the Faculty of Natural Sciences’ Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT).

Professor Rahila Gowon, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), spoke on behalf of the VC, who urged all of the university’s academic staff to embrace the new course.

Additionally, he expressed hope that the training program run by ORD will give researchers practical experience that will improve their ability to write proposals in order to secure research grants and projects financed by other countries.

He claims that arrangements are being made to guarantee that academic staff members who receive research grants receive extra points in the university’s upcoming promotion contests.

Despite praising the university’s highly skilled researchers, the venture capitalist lamented Nigeria’s inadequate funding for research possibilities and urged industry participants, businesses, funding partners, and other stakeholders to view research as the path forward for national development.

Ishaya recommended that all federal agencies create departments dedicated to research and development (R&D).

He declared that the departments would be required to conduct research projects intended to offer answers to the country’s issues.
