Dr. Osagie Emmanuel Ehanire, Minister of Health, stated that the Federal Government has implemented a one-to-one policy to address the problem of brain drain in the health sector.

The Minister, who made the announcement while launching projects at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH, said that the one-to-one policy would allow a Chief Medical Director to replace a doctor or nurse who is permanently out of service immediately.

He encouraged the CMDs, however, not to misuse the procedure, recalling that when the policy was first implemented, it was quickly defeated because when one doctor departed, the administration replaced him with dozens of unprofessional ones, overwhelming the facility.

“This strategy is to enable the federal government to address the deficiencies in manpower in the health sector in the federal civil service,” Ehanire explained.

Previously, Prof Ememabasi Bassey, CMD of UUTH, stated that the Teaching Facility’s infrastructural rebirth stemmed from his initial assessment four years ago, which revealed that the hospital had not kept pace with the expected change in the tertiary healthcare sector.

He explained that the federal government sponsored the majority of the projects through the COVID -19 money.
