Kano aims over N80bn revenue with tax reforms

The Kano State Government has declared plans to raise additional money by establishing a tougher tax reform program, targeting at least N80 billion annually.

Similarly, as part of extensive reforms in tax administration, the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf is gearing up to prosecute tax defaulters in 2025.

According to Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Director General of Media and Publicity at Government House, Kano, the reform was disclosed during a presentation by Dr Zaid Abubakar, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service, KIRS, at a high-level retreat for senior government officials on Saturday.

Dr Abubakar underlined that the revisions would not add new levies but instead focus on enhancing the present system’s efficiency.

The state is planned to produce over N20 billion quarterly, accumulating to much about N80 billion in 2025, by implementing innovative techniques to tax collection.

In addition, he mentioned that the revenue agency’s performance has been much better since Governor Yusuf appointed a new management team in 2024 to reorganize it.

The government also intends to implement a new tax collecting methodology in 2025 with the goal of increasing openness and compliance.

The government of Kano State will be able to deliver on its campaign pledges to the people by using this substantial increase in money to launch vital developmental programs in a range of sectors.
