Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed Dogara, the National Youth Service Corps’s (NYSC) director general, has reaffirmed the program’s zero-tolerance attitude on protests and indiscipline among active-duty members.

Several corps members have tried protests in the last three months, leading to disciplinary procedures against them, according to Dogara, who issued the warning during a working visit to the temporary orientation camp in Kaduna.

He emphasized to the corps members that they are expected to follow the rules laid out in the scheme’s bylaws, which clearly state the repercussions of indiscipline.

“We do not permit protest in NYSC because we are disciplined and obey the law, just like in the Army and the Police. Therefore, review your bylaws if someone tries to trick you.

A small number of our corps members have shown a lack of discipline during the past three months. They made an effort to demonstrate. He explained that their lack of discipline was the reason they were being held behind.

Most night journeys are dangerous and have led to accidents and kidnappings, he said, expressing concern over the safety of corps members.

It is critical to take proactive steps to avoid such events, he said, and the scheme has lost multiple corps members to night excursions. He urged corps members to stop going on night journeys and put their safety first.

These endless night excursions, which have killed so many people, have been my main worry. On rare occasions, kids are abducted or involved in accidents from which they are never heard from again.

“The welfare and security of corps members is one of my top priorities, which is why I make it a point to emphasize these two issues wherever I go,” the DG continued.

He made an announcement regarding the allowance for corps members, stating that the government has decided to increase it from N33,000 to N77,000.

As soon as the required procedures, particularly the financial support, are finished, he promised, the rise will show up in the allowances of the corps members.

I must inform you that the New York State Service Corps has always successfully petitioned the government for an increase in corps members’ allowances whenever there has been a wage rise, and the government has never refused our requests.

The government has doubled the amount from N33,000 to N77,000 this time. “We have been informed of other processes, so all we are waiting for is the cash back,” he confirmed.
