Combating HIV/AIDS is being impeded by a lack of funds according to YOSACA

A major obstacle in the battle against HIV/AIDS in the State is the lack of sufficient money, according to Dr. Jibrin Adamu Damazai, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Agency for Control of AIDS (YOSACA).

On the eve of World AIDS Day this year, Damazai voiced his concern.

To maintain the sustainability of HIV response activities and to extend initiatives targeting vulnerable groups including children, adolescents, and women, YOSACA would need more funds, he stressed.

This is reportedly not an issue exclusive to Yobe State; rather, it is a reflection of the wider problem in Nigeria, where donor money for the HIV/AIDS response has been steadily declining over the past few years.

However, experts have cautioned that inadequate HIV testing and treatment services are among the dire outcomes that can result from a lack of financing.

Their advice for overcoming these obstacles is to raise knowledge and education about HIV/AIDS, decrease discrimination and stigma, and improve financing for HIV/AIDS programs.
