Godwin Emefiele, the recently-retired governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday before the Federal High Court in Lagos to a charge of illegally possessing a firearm that the Ministry of Justice had brought against him.
He was charged with unlicensed possession of guns on two counts at his arraignment.
In the first count, Emefiele was charged with violating Section 4 of the Firearms Act and Section 27 (1b) of the same Act by having a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a license.
In the second count, the suspended CBN governor is charged with violating Section 8 of the Firearms Act and Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act by possessing 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without a permit.
On June 10, the former CBN governor was detained following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu.
