The Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed how a commercial bank in Ogun State squandered roughly N4 million in new naira notes.
The CBN also stated that it discovered certain banks stockpiling the new notes in their vaults for unknown reasons.
Kayode Makinde, Deputy Director, Banking Supervision Department, CBN Lagos, said this on Tuesday during an interview with newsmen in Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital.
While accusing some commercial banks of sabotaging the CBN’s efforts to make the new naira notes available to customers, Makinde, who led a team on the monitoring exercise in Ogun, stated that they have been going round the State for the past three weeks to ensure compliance with the CBN’s directives regarding the issuance of the new notes.
The CBN team leader urged Nigerians to blame commercial banks rather than the CBN for the lack of fresh naira notes.
He said that the team had discovered a commercial bank that mismanaged new notes issued by the CBN, threatening that such a bank and its officials would face severe sanctions.
“We discovered one of the commercial banks that could not account for about four million naira of the new notes, and appropriate sanctions would be imposed on them,” Makinde said.
He went on to claim that “we witnessed some trying to hoard new notes,” but they were forced to upload them into their ATM terminals because others had poor cash management.
Makinde stated that instead of attempting to ration the new notes, bank employees were instructed to upload the ones they already had and contact their Central Cash Management Unit, which has direct access to the CBN.
“We discovered instances of sabotage on the part of operators; we will investigate and take appropriate action.”
Makinde went on to say that commercial banks were told not to pay out the new notes over the counter, but rather with other notes.
“Some of them did it and ran out of money. Some branches used resourceful financial management techniques and never ran out of cash, whilst others ran out of cash and are still waiting for their source,” he stated.
