Blindness could be avoided, according to Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, provided the Nigeria Optometric Association, NOA, raises awareness.
The Governor lamented that the data available suggested that 80% of blindness was preventable when he made this statement during his remarks at the 46th Annual National Conference and Vision Expo of the Association in Asaba.
The conference’s topic, “The Optometrist: An Indispensable Partner in Healthcare Delivery,” was appropriate, according to Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government, SSG.
He issued a warning that quacks must not be permitted to practice in the healthcare industry and pledged that his administration will take the necessary steps to maintain the sector’s sanity.
“Healthcare in Nigeria and throughout the world is the result of teamwork, and in that team, each professional is crucial since they individually play a vital part in the efficient delivery of healthcare.
“Optometrists, as eye care providers, have a key role to play in preventing avoidable blindness through early detection and management of conditions that could pose a threat to the health of the eye,” he stated.
Dr. Obinna Awaika, the association’s national president, praised the Governor for his support of the national conference in his remarks.
Prof. Sam Oyovbaire, the event’s chairman, urged the attendees to expose themselves to the knowledge that will be learned from the conference.
The state chairman of the association, Dr. Chucks Odiase, urged attendees to participate fully in the event because they would learn a lot from the speakers.
Dr. Peter Mrakpor, SAN, provided a keynote presentation.
